Job Overview

The Packaging Engineering Manager (PEM) is the lead spokesperson and subject matter expert for the company regarding all packaging matters. This position is responsible for leading the Packaging Department including development of new packaging designs, package testing, sustainability initiatives, working with suppliers and supporting the production of our product at our manufacturing facilities. The PEM works cross functionally with Operations, Industrial Performance, Engineering, Marketing and Procurement to balance consumer and customer needs in look, form, consistency and function with manufacturing capabilities and efficiencies. They support new packaging equipment capabilities that align with growth and renovation initiatives as well as support existing business through packaging revisions, cost improvement projects, and packaging simplification projects. Additionally, the Packaging Engineering Manager works in collaboration with our sister companies for Lindt North America as well as Lindt Global Packaging Council on global packaging matters. This role sets departmental priorities, helps build brands, and supports the strategies, goals and objectives for the company.

They are a detail oriented and strategic thinker who develops and leads structure and systems necessary for projects and teams to be successful. This person is organized and capable of distilling different operational challenges into their root problems in order to develop the right solutions and processes to address them. They are excellent problem solvers.

This position leads a team of Packaging Engineers and a Packaging Designer and develops the team by hiring, goal setting, providing performance reviews, coaching, teamwork, and through packaging projects.

Scope of Responsibility:

  • Lead point of contact and key spokesperson for all Packaging activities.
  • Lead, motivate, direct and develop packaging engineers to achieve personal growth and success while making meaningful contributions to the success of the Innovation Team
  • Leads external partners: package designers, industrial designers and vendors on new or changing packaging and display structures.
  • Manages key material suppliers from a technical and design perspective.
  • Leads a problem analysis and solution on any and all issues faced in the package creation and vetting process
  • Support packaging issues and improvements at plant level to determine root cause of issue and develop plan to improve.
  • Facilitate problem solving and team building within a cross functional team environment.
  • Provide expertise for troubleshooting, process improvement, and quality management of product packaging.
  • Provide technical packaging support to cross functional teams (Marketing, Purchasing, Operations, Supply Chain, Quality) and assume the packaging leadership role for the organization.
  • Gathers and translates insights into potential strategic packaging opportunities.
  • Design, develop, specify, and commercialize innovative and creative packaging components (primary, secondary, tertiary, displays, PDQs, and shippers).
  • Identifies simplification cost optimization projects within the portfolio and advocates for them
  • Prioritize packaging projects and assume responsibility for success.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records and databases.
  • Owns the development and maintenance of corporate standards to ensure the continuity of structural design and components for each product line. (ex: Business Packaging Strategy and Handbooks)
  • Create package test plans, protocols and success criteria.
  • Monitor testing and interpret data to ensure package integrity throughout product lifecycle.
  • Independently manage an up-to-date knowledge of industry developments and trends for possible application within RSC by reviewing trade journals, participating in professional societies, attending trade shows, seminars and consulting suppliers.


  • Leadership experience with the ability to nurture and grow a successful team.

  • Problem solver with the knowledge to provide technical alternatives and solutions for improving packaging design and performance.
  • Ability to effectively communicate ideas, concepts and procedures to all levels within the organization.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work within a cross functional team environment.
  • Strong technical knowledge of flexible packaging, folding carton, and corrugated materials.
  • Ability to set department priorities and strategies.
  • Understanding of packaging rules and regulations, with an emphasis on food safety and compliance.
  • Strong Project Management skills managing multiple fast paced projects.
  • Computer literacy in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Project Management software and TOPS. Experience with DevEx (PLM) desirable.

Education and Experience:

  • BS Degree in Packaging or equivalent
  • Fifteen years or more experience in food/consumer goods packaging development.
